EU and Malaysia enter the final stage of timber negotiations

The “Participatory Voluntary Trade Agreement” (VPA) between the EU and Malaysia on promoting the legal production of timber and the relationship between harvesting trade has entered the final stage of negotiations. The agreement aims to maintain the durability and legitimacy of timber production while also providing the amount of tropical wood in Europe. According to Vincent, the EU ambassador to Malaysia and head of the negotiating team, “We are in the final stages of negotiations. We are also doing the final technical work for the signing of the agreement. If all goes well, it will be in June or July. There was a meeting of senior negotiators to resolve some outstanding issues.” In order to combat the illegal collection of timber, the EU established a committee to take positive action to develop its own forest law enforcement and action plan for governance trade.
